The first worship service was held at Brown's Hall in Mill Valley on November 9, 1947. The church was organized on January 25, 1948 with 37 charter members present. Ground was broken in March 1949 and the building was completed, largely by volunteer labor, in September, 1949.
Members of Marin Lutheran Church provided the nucleus for the establishment of three new congregations in Marin County in 1960: Good Shepard in Novato, Christ the Victor in Fairfax and Shepherd of the Hills in Tiburon.
The overflow of the Sunday School classes into members’ homes and nearby offices, led to the building and dedication of the Christian Education Building in 1964.
A Moeller pipe organ was installed in 1972 and a Kawai grand piano was purchased in 1983. The organ was significantly upgraded in 2000.
The memorial Plaza with benches and plantings was developed in 1988. Renovation of the sanctuary was completed in 1994 and a handicap-access bathroom, lounge and small kitchen were added in 1995. In 2000, the narthex was enlarged and a new entrance was created in memory of Sammie Sanford Dunn.
